Texturing the Drywall
After the drywall is installed in the new home the process of taping and mudding the joints and screws begins. It's important that the home be heated with a permanent heat source if winter conditions are a factor. Temporary heaters can, sometimes, dry the tape coating too quickly, resulting in cracking, and shrinking of the joint compound materials. Therefore permanent heat will provide the best results.
Hamilton Prep Coating
After the joints have been floated out to a smooth surface, and properly sanded, the wall is ready for application of the texture coating. Prior to spraying the texture onto the wall board, there is a technique that can be employed to minimize the possibility that the tape joints will be visible through the textured and painted wall. This process is referred to in the trade as "Hamilton Prep Coating." the result is highly desirable if the process is performed properly.
After the joint between wallboard panels is disguised with tape and joint compound (mud), repeated aplications of topping compound and sandings results in a smooth surface. The Hamilton Prep coating is the next step. The center of each drywall panel, at this point, is paper. If texture were to be applied now, the paper area of the drywall (without topping compound) will cure differently then the area with the topping compound. In the finished product, this may cause lines to show up at certain light conditions.

The Hamilton Prep Coat material is sprayed on the entire wall surface prior to texture application. This product is utilized as a primer for the texture and paint. The process will help the texture and paint to cure more evenly, creating a more uniform finish, and limiting the likelihood of lines showing through.
If lines show through, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate them with additional coats of paint.
Insure that your contractor employs this well-known drywall preparation technique.
