Properly installed window

Window Installation

Proper window installation will insure protection against water and air leaks.

One of the most important items to consider when installing windows in the newly framed opening of the home, is the proper type of flashing. The type of flashing used on either a wood sided home or a plaster finished home should be the same. The procedure starts with the application of a minimum twelve-inch wide felt based paper to the surround of the wall at the rough window opening. The felt paper should be installed in a counter flashed method, which means the bottom, or sill piece is installed first, the sides second, overlapping the bottom, then the top or header piece last. After the sub flashing is installed, the window frame is prepared for the opening.

To prepare the window for the opening, caulk is applied to the backside of the window flange with an exterior grade caulking. The window is then installed into the rough opening against the felt paper, creating a continuous seal around the frame. After checking the window for square, the installer should nail the flange to the rough framing. The final treatment required is to install a rubberized bituethane flashing material against the window flange, which overlaps the felt material.

Windows installed in this manner should provide a life long protection against weather related problems.
