ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ

Preventing Water Damage to the Eves

Do you have freezing temperatures where you are going to build? You may need an "ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ".

An "ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ" is a rubberized water proof material that prevents the melting ice at the eave from leaking into the roof sheeting. Pearce Construction utilizes the ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ manufactured by W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn.

When the snow that has built up on the roof begins to melt during the warmer day-time temperatures, the resulting water runs down the sloped roof under the snow. When the water reaches the eave it will have a tendancy to freeze, build up, and create an ice cornice. This ice acts as a dam to cause additional run-off to weep up under the roofing material through a capilary action. The cornice usually forms at night when the temperature drops.

Without an ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ installed on your eave (up 2 feet minimum from the outside face of stud) your roof will eventually rot out at the eave. The ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ is required by the building dept. when your house is above 5300 feet.

There is no reason not to install an ICE & WATER SHIELDŽ if there is a danger of freezing where you build. Check out the cost, and you will buy the "insurance."

Ask your builder about this little bit of preventative medicine.
