Controlling Concrete Expansion
A large concrete slab expands and contracts as the temperature changes. Uneveness in the expansion rate will cause cracks. The builder cannot prevent the cracking, but he can control it.
The usual control method is to trowel in a groove and hope that cracking will occur along the groove. You have probably noticed sidewalks contain groves. This is the reason.
There is a better way to control expansion cracking. The premier builder will take the little extra effort to "cut" the concrete with a concrete saw after the concrete has set up. The concrete slab is now a complex of smaller slabs which can expand and contract without cracking across the slabs. The photo shows an example of cuts in a garage floor.
Before you select your building contractor, ask about this little employed method to avoid cracks in your garage floor.
